The Manor (2021)

The Manor stands out by turning a nursing home into a pressure-cooker of dread, where the scariest thing isn’t just what goes bump in the night, but what happens when no one believes you. Anchored by a terrific Barbara Hershey, it plays like a classy paranoia thriller: tight, steadily escalating, and soaked in moody atmosphere that makes every hallway feel a little too quiet and every kindly smile a little too rehearsed. Director Axelle Carolyn keeps the suspense on a teasing rhythm, letting uncertainty do the heavy lifting until the story clicks into an inventive, satisfyingly wicked shape. It’s not the goriest horror ride and it won’t be for viewers who want nonstop shocks, but if you like smart, contained mysteries with a morally thorny sting in the tail, this one’s an easy recommendation.

The Manor is clearly aiming for a classy, slow-burn “gaslighting in a creepy old facility” horror mystery, with real empathy for aging, illness, and being dismissed when you know something’s wrong. Barbara Hershey gives it a grounded center and there are a few nicely eerie moments, but the movie leans hard on familiar beats, repeats its scares, and often feels like it’s just marking time until the reveal. The pacing is sluggish, the visuals are fairly plain for a haunted-manor setup, and the final stretch explains things so thoroughly it drains away tension—plus the ending choice will either strike you as bold or leave you feeling cheated. If you want sharp, inventive scares or a twisty mystery, this probably isn’t for you; if you’re okay with a gentle, predictable supernatural thriller carried by an older lead, you may still get something out of it.
