Rock of Ages (2012)

Rock of Ages is the kind of big, candy-colored jukebox musical that doesn’t tiptoe into the room so much as kick the door open with a power chord and a grin, turning 1987’s Sunset Strip into a neon fever dream of ambition, romance, and rock-star chaos. Adam Shankman keeps the camera moving and the mood buoyant, letting the story’s familiar beats ride on sheer momentum while the cast sells the fantasy with winking sincerity—especially Tom Cruise, who commits so fully to his swaggering legend that you can practically hear the hairspray hiss. The movie’s greatest pleasure is how shamelessly it wants to entertain you: the numbers are loud, slick, and joyfully over-the-top, like a greatest-hits mixtape brought to life. If you’re allergic to camp or prefer your romances subtle, it may feel like too much, but if you’re willing to surrender to the vibe, it’s a surprisingly infectious good time.

Rock of Ages wants to be a big, neon-lit valentine to ’80s hair metal—part jukebox musical, part backstage romance, part goofy comedy—and you can tell it’s aiming for crowd-pleasing fun. The problem is the story is paper-thin and padded, so whenever the songs stop, the movie tends to sag and feel longer than it needs to be. It also plays surprisingly safe for a supposedly wild rock-and-roll world, which can make the whole thing feel a bit sanitized and bland if you’re expecting real edge. Still, if you’re mainly here for familiar hits, campy energy, and a few committed performances (especially from the supporting cast), it can work; if you need a sharp plot or authentic grit, this probably isn’t your night.
