Day Shift (2022)

Day Shift is the kind of movie that reminds you how much fun a well-made genre mashup can be: a vampire-hunting action-comedy that moves like it’s got rocket fuel in its veins. Director J.J. Perry brings stunt-world know-how to the screen, delivering crunchy, inventive fights where the vampires don’t just go down—they fold, twist, and explode in ways that are equal parts gnarly and gleeful. Jamie Foxx sells the whole ride with swagger and heart as a working dad in over his head, while Dave Franco’s anxious rule-follower makes for a surprisingly winning buddy dynamic that keeps the jokes flowing between bursts of mayhem. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to profanity, but if you want a breezy, blood-splattered good time with legit choreography and a playful vibe, this one earns its fangs.

Day Shift is clearly trying to be a breezy, blue-collar vampire-hunting romp with big stunts, buddy-comedy banter, and a ticking-clock “dad needs cash” hook. When it leans into J.J. Perry’s action-chops, the fights are energetic and Jamie Foxx sells the swagger, with Dave Franco providing a deliberately awkward foil. The problem is the story and dialogue feel like they’re running on autopilot, so the jokes and stakes rarely land with any real bite and the villain plot plays more like a checklist than a surprise. If you want sharp writing, world-building, or anything resembling horror tension, this will likely feel disposable; if you just want loud, gory, stunt-forward popcorn entertainment for one night, it does that job well enough.
