Nizhal is the kind of mystery-thriller that hooks you not with loud shocks, but with a quietly unsettling idea: what if a child’s “story” knows too much? Appu N. Bhattathiri’s direction keeps the film simmering with dread and curiosity, letting Sooraj S. Kurup’s moody score and Deepak D. Menon’s sleek, shadowy cinematography do the heavy lifting as the puzzle tightens. Kunchacko Boban anchors it with a lived-in performance as a magistrate carrying trauma, while Nayanthara brings a steady, watchful presence that deepens the unease. It’s more of an atmosphere-and-mind-game ride than a nonstop action thriller, but if you like mysteries that feel like they’re whispering in the dark, this one rewards your attention.

Nizhal clearly wants to be a slick, moody mystery where a child’s “stories” lead a traumatized magistrate into a chilling real-world puzzle, and the setup genuinely hooks you at first. The problem is the script strains credibility with logical gaps and convenient turns, so the tension you’re investing in doesn’t always feel earned. It also drags in spots and, when it finally reaches the payoff, the reveal can feel oddly underpowered for all that buildup, with Nayanthara frustratingly underused. Watch it if you’re in the mood for a restrained, atmosphere-first thriller and can forgive wobbly writing; skip it if you need airtight plotting and a knockout climax.
