Blood (2023)

Blood earns its chills by grounding its supernatural dread in something painfully human: a mother’s love turning into desperation, and desperation turning into a kind of moral free-fall. Brad Anderson directs with a steady, nerve-tightening hand, letting the quiet farmhouse spaces, the sickly hush of the woods, and the clinical unease of hospital corridors build an atmosphere that feels both intimate and inescapable. Michelle Monaghan is terrific at the center, making Jess’s choices feel heartbreakingly plausible even as the film slides into darker, bloodier territory, and the scares land because they’re tethered to emotion rather than gimmicks. Be warned, it’s not for the squeamish—there’s intense threat involving a child and some gnarly imagery—but if you like horror that’s as much about dread and consequence as it is about shocks, this one sinks in.

The problem is it’s fairly predictable and sometimes oddly paced, stretching its central hook without adding enough new tension, so what should feel like a tightening noose can play like a series of expected steps. If you’re sensitive to prolonged peril involving children, blood-focused body horror, or you want your mysteries to pay off with real originality, this may feel more draining than satisfying—even if the performances and atmosphere keep it watchable.
