Apex (2021)
Ex-cop Thomas Malone is serving a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. He is offered a chance at freedom if he can survive a deadly game of Apex, in which six hunters pay for the pleasure of hunting another human on a remote island. He accepts, and once he arrives, all hell breaks loose.
What people think about Apex
Apex is the kind of lean, nasty little thriller that takes a gloriously outlandish premise—rich predators paying to hunt a man—and plays it with enough straight-faced conviction that you can enjoy the pulp without feeling like the movie’s winking at you. Dropped onto a remote island with the clock ticking and bullets flying, it keeps a brisk, survival-game momentum, letting paranoia and ego among the hunters become part of the danger, not just the spectacle. Bruce Willis brings a weathered, cornered toughness to the role, while Neal McDonough clearly relishes being the cultured monster at the center of the madness, giving the film a villain you can love to hate. It’s not for viewers sensitive to graphic violence or looking for deep sci-fi worldbuilding, but if you want a hard-edged, knowingly absurd action ride that still takes itself seriously moment to moment, it’s an easy pick for a fun night in.
Apex is aiming for a lean, pulpy “most dangerous game” thriller where a wronged man turns the tables on rich psychopaths, and on paper that’s a perfectly serviceable Friday-night premise. The problem is the execution: it feels cheap and oddly sluggish for something built around a manhunt, with action that rarely lands and a script that leans hard on clichés you’ve seen done better elsewhere. Bruce Willis is more of a presence than a driving force here, while Neal McDonough at least commits to the villainy and gives the movie a bit of bite. If you’re hoping for tense cat-and-mouse suspense or slick sci‑fi thrills, you’ll likely be bored; if you just want background-grade survival action with plenty of violence, you might tolerate it.
