Rockhead (2008)
Shattering the story of a talented former boxer. He lost his memory. He does not remember what happened yesterday. He can not sleep. Each morning starts with a clean sheet for him. The powers that be decided to use it in my game. As a bargaining chip. He will understand. And revenge. In one day, he needs to catch it.
What people think about Rockhead
Rockhead has the bruised, pulpy appeal of a noir thriller filtered through the raw physicality of a boxing drama: a man built for combat trapped inside a mind that won’t hold onto yesterday. Filipp Yankovsky keeps the tension tight and immediate, letting the film’s bleak atmosphere and forward drive do the heavy lifting as the hero races against his own fractured memory. Nikolay Valuev brings a startling presence—part human battering ram, part wounded soul—which makes every confrontation feel heavier than mere action beats. It’s not a glossy crowd-pleaser and the storytelling can feel jagged by design, but if you’re in the mood for something gritty, urgent, and morally shadowed, it hits with a satisfying thud.
Rockhead is clearly aiming for a gritty, high-stakes revenge thriller with a clever hook: a bruiser of a former boxer forced to piece his life together from scratch every morning while powerful people push him around like a pawn. The problem is that the story can feel muddled and repetitive, leaning so hard on the amnesia gimmick that character depth and coherent motivation sometimes get left on the canvas. If you need tight plotting, clear stakes, and emotionally convincing drama, this may test your patience. But if you’re in the mood for a rough-edged Russian action-drama with a bleak vibe, some striking physical presence from Nikolay Valuev, and a “one bad day” chase energy, it might still land for you.
