John Wells stages Tracy Letts’ play like a darkly funny family reckoning, and watching Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts go toe-to-toe is less “movie night” than front-row seats to a masterclass in emotional truth. The vibe is sharp, bitter, and occasionally hilarious in that wince-inducing way real families can be, with the Oklahoma house feeling like a battleground that no one can quite leave behind. It’s intense, talky, and unflinching—so if you’re looking for comfort, this isn’t it—but if you want a blistering drama that earns its laughter and hurts in the right places, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

August: Osage County is clearly aiming for a no-holds-barred portrait of a family imploding, powered by big performances and sharper-than-knives dialogue. The problem is it often feels less like lived-in drama and more like a stage play turned up to maximum volume, with confrontations that keep escalating until the intensity starts to feel punishing rather than illuminating. Any “comedy” here is pitch-black and sporadic, so if you’re expecting balance or catharsis, you may just end up exhausted by the heavy-handed melodrama and relentless bitterness. That said, Streep and Roberts are undeniably compelling, so if you can handle harsh themes, constant shouting, and emotional ugliness as the point, it can still be a gripping watch.
