Olivier Assayas directs with the confidence of someone who can juggle ideology, logistics, and human vanity in the same breath, and Édgar Ramírez gives a magnetic performance that makes you understand how a man can weaponize charm as effectively as a gun. The film’s vibe is tense, procedural, and relentlessly forward-moving, packed with the kind of lived-in detail—hotel lobbies, safe houses, negotiations, sudden violence—that makes the era feel uncannily present. It is long and unflinching, with explicit sex and brutal violence, so it’s not for everyone, but if you want an ambitious, high-voltage historical drama that plays like a political thriller and leaves you thinking, it’s absolutely worth the time.

Carlos is clearly aiming to be the definitive, boots-on-the-ground chronicle of Ilich Ramírez Sánchez’s rise and long, messy decline, and Olivier Assayas commits to that ambition with a sweeping, historically minded approach. The problem is it’s so long, dense, and detail-heavy that it can feel less like a gripping thriller and more like you’re cramming for an exam—events pile up faster than the film gives you a reason to emotionally care. If you want a sharp psychological portrait or a clean, propulsive crime story, this may frustrate you, and the explicit sex/nudity and frequent violence are not remotely toned down. Still, Edgar Ramírez is magnetic and the period authenticity is strong, so if you’re patient and enjoy procedural realism over character intimacy, it can be absorbing rather than exhausting.
