Glorious 39 (2009)

Glorious 39 is special because it turns the last golden summer before World War II into a velvet-gloved nightmare, where sunlight on the lawns can’t hide the rot underneath. Stephen Poliakoff stages the story like a period postcard slowly curling at the edges, building a conspiracy-thriller hush that tightens with every polite smile and closed door, and Romola Garai is terrific as a young woman whose intelligence becomes both her power and her peril. With Bill Nighy and Julie Christie lending gravitas, the film’s pleasures are in its creeping menace, its immaculate sense of time and place, and the unnerving idea that betrayal can feel like family tradition. It’s more mood and moral dread than action-forward war movie, but if you like your history as a mystery with teeth, it’s an absorbing watch.

Glorious 39 is clearly aiming for a classy, paranoia-soaked pre-war thriller about a privileged British family rotting from the inside, with Romola Garai doing earnest work as the lone truth-teller. The problem is it often confuses “mysterious” with “muddled,” piling on secret recordings, suspicious deaths, and conspiratorial turns that can feel contrived rather than inevitable, and the editing doesn’t always help the story land cleanly. If you need tight momentum, clear logic, and a thriller that builds pressure with precision, this may test your patience and start to feel directionless. Still, if you’re in the mood for Poliakoff’s period atmosphere, strong actors (Bill Nighy and Julie Christie included), and a slow-burn mood piece where vibes matter more than plot mechanics, there’s something to enjoy.
