Cherry (2010)

Cherry is special because it takes a potentially sensational setup and treats it like real life: messy, tender, funny in the way awkward honesty can be funny, and ultimately humane. Jeffrey Fine’s direction and script keep the tone intimate and observant, letting the relationships breathe instead of forcing them into easy judgments, while Kyle Gallner, Laura Allen, and Britt Robertson give performances that feel lived-in rather than “performed.” It’s a coming-of-age story with a slightly bruised romantic glow, where every character is trying to grow up at a different speed and keeps bumping into the others. If you’re looking for broad comedy or a neat, conventional romance, this may not be your flavor—but if you like heartfelt indie dramedies that trust character over melodrama, Cherry is an easy film to root for.

Cherry is clearly aiming for a coming-of-age dramedy about messy love, bad timing, and the kind of “education” you don’t get in class, and it does have a sincere, low-budget indie vibe with a few grounded performances. The problem is the movie can’t decide if it wants to be quirky romantic comedy or heavy melodrama, so the tone swerves hard and often, making big moments feel unearned. The central setup also risks feeling more uncomfortable than insightful, and the script piles on conflicts so quickly that the characters don’t get enough depth to carry the emotional weight.
