What people think about Punch
Punch is the kind of drama that sneaks up on you with its tenderness, then lands with the force of something painfully true: a coming-of-self story set against the brutal poetry of small-town boxing culture. Welby Ings observes his characters with real compassion, letting quiet looks and hesitant conversations carry as much weight as the ring ever does, and Jordan Oosterhof and Conan Hayes share a connection that feels immediate and lived-in rather than scripted. Tim Roth brings a worn, soulful gravity that deepens every scene, grounding the film’s emotional stakes without turning it into a speech about acceptance. Be warned, it’s raw and often harrowing—violence, language, and ugliness aren’t softened—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you can handle its intensity, it’s a fiercely humane film that earns its hope.
Punch (2022) clearly wants to be a raw coming-of-age drama about masculinity, small-town cruelty, and a young boxer realizing who he is, and it does have a grounded central performance and a tender, beachy sense of place. The problem is the storytelling often feels like it’s hitting familiar beats, and by the second half it leans hard into big, tragic turns that can come off as overheated melodrama rather than earned emotion. It’s also extremely intense and explicit, with severe violence, sexual assault content, heavy substance use, and relentless profanity—so if you’re looking for a nuanced, hopeful queer romance or a sports drama that doesn’t punish its characters, this may feel more draining than moving. If you can handle grim subject matter and want a blunt, bruising drama with a few genuine moments of warmth, it may still land for you.
