Devil (2010)

Devil takes a wonderfully simple setup—a stalled elevator and five strangers—and turns it into a tight, nasty little pressure cooker where every flicker of light feels like a verdict. John Erick Dowdle keeps the movie moving with brisk, clockwork pacing, letting the suspense build not through elaborate mythology but through the creeping dread of being watched, trapped, and forced to suspect the people inches from you. It plays like a supernatural whodunit with a mean streak: the mystery is always advancing, the atmosphere is claustrophobic, and the scares land with PG-13 efficiency that still bites. If you want sprawling lore or subtle character studies, this isn’t that—but if you’re on the fence and crave a lean thriller that makes one location feel like a whole haunted city, it’s an easy recommendation.

Devil is clearly trying to be a tight, single-location pressure cooker: a “who’s lying?” mystery wrapped in a supernatural morality tale, with the elevator as a literal and figurative trap. The problem is that the setup feels smarter than the payoff, leaning on flickering lights, sudden shocks, and characters making questionable choices rather than building genuinely clever suspense. If you’re hoping for deep psychological horror or a mystery you can logically solve alongside the detectives, this may feel thin and a bit contrived.
