Once Upon a Snowman (2020)

Once Upon a Snowman is a small, sparkling gift for anyone who ever smiled at Olaf and wondered how that big-hearted goofball first found his way into the world. It slips neatly into the snowy margins of Frozen with nimble, storybook animation and a playful, almost silent-comedy rhythm, letting Josh Gad’s voice work carry the warmth and wit like a familiar holiday tune. The vibe is light, cozy, and cheerfully adventurous—just a dash of cartoon peril, a lot of innocence, and a surprisingly sweet little nudge toward self-discovery. If you’re allergic to Olaf’s brand of exuberance it won’t convert you, but if you’re even slightly on his wavelength, this short feels like a warm hug that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Once Upon a Snowman is clearly trying to give Frozen fans a cute, bite-sized “how Olaf became Olaf” detour, leaning hard on Josh Gad’s charm and that familiar Arendelle energy. The problem is it’s so short and lightweight that it can feel more like a bonus clip than a story with anything meaningful to say, and it doesn’t really deepen the Frozen world in a way that justifies the premise. If you’re hoping for new emotional ground, bigger stakes, or anything that changes how you see the franchise, this will likely leave you shrugging.
