Explained

What people think about Broker

Broker is the kind of film that takes a morally thorny premise and, in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s hands, turns it into something quietly luminous—less a crime story than a tender road movie about the people we become when we’re forced to care for one another. It moves with a gentle, rain-washed melancholy, finding unexpected humor and grace in awkward silences and small acts of decency, while never pretending its characters’ choices are clean or easy. Song Kang-ho anchors the film with a performance of bruised warmth, and the ensemble (including Bae Doona’s watchful detective) gives the story a lived-in humanity that sneaks up on you. It won’t be for everyone if you want a fast, twisty thriller, but if you’re open to a compassionate drama that lingers on what family can mean in the margins, this one is deeply worth the trip.
