No One Gets Out Alive (2021)
An immigrant in search of the American dream is forced to take a room in a boarding house and soon finds herself in a nightmare from which she can't escape.
What people think about No One Gets Out Alive
No One Gets Out Alive stands out because it takes a classic haunted-house setup and injects it with a bruising, human reality—the fear of being unseen, unheard, and trapped by circumstances—before it ever reaches for the supernatural. Santiago Menghini builds dread with stylish, shadow-soaked cinematography and a slow, tightening sense of mystery, while Cristina Rodlo anchors it all with a performance that makes every anxious choice feel painfully lived-in. The vibe is grimy, claustrophobic, and relentlessly tense, with unsettling imagery and a mythic undercurrent that gives the horror a fresh, specific flavor instead of the usual ghost-story wallpaper. It’s not for viewers who want light, jump-scare fun—the film leans into exploitation themes and harsh, R-rated nastiness—but if you like your horror atmospheric, idea-driven, and genuinely nerve-rattling, this one gets under the skin.
No One Gets Out Alive is clearly aiming for socially conscious horror, using an immigrant’s vulnerability and a grim boarding house to build dread and commentary at the same time. When it leans into atmosphere, it can be effectively creepy, and Cristina Rodlo does solid work selling fear and exhaustion. But the film’s scares start to feel repetitive, the writing can be thin, and the mythology arrives in a way that’s more noisy than coherent, which makes the pacing drag and the choices feel oddly convenient. If you want a tight, character-driven mystery-thriller with clean rules and a satisfying build, this may frustrate you; if you’re happy with moody, bleak vibes and some nasty imagery doing most of the heavy lifting, it’ll likely go down easier.
