Strange Way of Life (2023)

Strange Way of Life feels like a classic Western seen through a new, intimate lens: sunlit landscapes, loaded silences, and a romance that’s as tender as it is unresolved. Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke bring a lived-in chemistry that makes every glance and half-finished sentence feel consequential, while Almodóvar’s direction turns a brief runtime into something lush, sensual, and surprisingly soulful. It’s provocative without being showy, more interested in emotional truth than genre fireworks, and the result is quietly rewarding long after it ends. If you want a traditional shoot-’em-up, this may feel too restrained—but if you’re open to a queer Western that trades gun smoke for ache and honesty, it’s absolutely worth the ride.

Strange Way of Life is clearly aiming for a stylish, adult Western romance about regret, masculinity, and what’s left unsaid after decades apart, and on that level it has a strong mood and two committed lead performances. The problem is it can feel more like a sleek postcard than a fully lived-in story: the narrative is short, uneven, and sometimes leans on familiar genre beats instead of earning its emotional turns. If you’re hoping for a deep, nuanced exploration of queerness and character psychology, you may find it undercooked and a bit too enamored with its own surface, with elements that some viewers read as stereotyping rather than insight. If, however, you’re content with a visually polished, vibe-forward mini-Western that hints at a bigger tale, it may still be worth your time.
