Defendor (2009)
A crooked cop, a mob boss and the young girl they abuse are the denizens of a city's criminal underworld. It's a world that ordinary Arthur Poppington doesn't understand and doesn't belong in, but is committed to fighting when he changes into a vigilante super-hero of his own making, Defendor. With no power other than courage Defendor takes to the streets to protect the city's innocents.
What people think about Defendor
Defendor is special because it treats its homemade “superhero” not as a punchline, but as a wounded, brave human being—and Woody Harrelson makes that leap of faith feel utterly real. The film has an offbeat, scrappy charm, mixing dark comedy with genuine poignancy as it wanders through a grimy underworld and finds surprising tenderness in the cracks. It’s an original, emotionally ambitious riff on vigilante stories where courage is the only superpower that matters, and the stakes feel bruisingly personal. Fair warning: it’s rough around the edges and firmly R-rated in both subject matter and intensity, but if you’re on the fence and want something heartfelt, funny, and different, this one sneaks up on you.
Defendor is clearly trying to mash up a scrappy “homemade superhero” fantasy with a grimy crime drama about exploitation, and you can feel the heart behind that ambition. The problem is the tone keeps swerving between quirky comedy and genuinely ugly subject matter, so what’s meant to be endearing can land as uncomfortable or muddled instead. Woody Harrelson commits hard and gives the film its soul, and there are a few moments of real tenderness, but don’t expect a polished comic-book ride or a neatly satisfying story. If you’re sensitive to depictions of drugs, prostitution, and harsh violence—or you want your dark comedy to know exactly what it is—this one may test your patience.
