Vikram Bhatt stages the scares with a confident, old-school patience, letting suspense and atmosphere do the heavy lifting while the central relationship gives the terror real emotional stakes. It’s steeped in classic possession and exorcism traditions, but filters them through a distinctly Indian period setting that makes the familiar feel freshly ominous. Fair warning: the film goes hard on intense, disturbing imagery and supernatural cruelty, so it’s best for viewers who want their horror unapologetically relentless rather than merely spooky.

1920 is clearly aiming for old-school gothic horror in a British-era mansion, mixing romance, religious guilt, and a full-on possession/exorcism arc. When it works, the atmosphere is moody and Adah Sharma commits hard to the escalating torment, which gives some scenes real bite. But the film leans heavily on familiar horror beats and melodrama, so if you’re hoping for subtle scares, tight logic, or fresh twists, it can feel loud, repetitive, and a bit dated. Also be warned: the “frightening and intense” label is earned, with some nasty imagery and sustained distress that may be more exhausting than scary if you’re sensitive to that kind of horror.
