Some Like It Rare (2021)

Some Like It Rare is the kind of audacious, wickedly funny movie that dares you to laugh—and then catches you doing it, turning bad taste into a surprisingly sharp satire about modern outrage, consumer appetite, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. Fabrice Eboué directs with a gleeful, deadpan confidence, letting the absurdity escalate in just the right rhythm while Marina Foïs anchors the madness with a grounded, messy humanity that makes the comedy land. The vibe is pitch-black and brisk, splattered with horror-movie audacity but paced like a crowd-pleasing farce, where every new “solution” to a problem creates an even bigger one. It’s not for the squeamish (the gore is real and the film knows exactly how far it’s pushing you), but if you can handle severe violence in service of savage laughs, this is a deliciously nasty treat.

Some Like It Rare is clearly aiming for a cheeky French “eat-the-rich/anti-culture-war” satire wrapped in a splattery cannibal farce, and it commits to the premise with gusto. The problem is the joke doesn’t keep evolving: once you’ve bought into the setup, the film can feel a bit lightweight and repetitive, with pacing that sags and commentary that’s more provocative than genuinely sharp. The gore and body-horror details are not coy at all, so if you’re squeamish or just don’t want your comedy served with explicit butchery and nudity, this will be a hard pass. Still, if you like pitch-black, politically incorrect humor and can enjoy strong performances while the film coasts on its outrageous concept, you may find it a satisfyingly nasty little ride.
