Batman: Soul of the Dragon (2021)

Batman: Soul of the Dragon is the rare Batman animated film that feels like a lost cult classic—part neon-sleek 1970s kung-fu fever dream, part hardboiled crime adventure, with a mythic edge that gives it its own pulse. Sam Liu stages the action with crisp, bruising clarity, letting every kick, blade, and close-quarters scramble tell a story, while the soundtrack and retro styling lock you into a smoky, grindhouse vibe that’s irresistibly cool. It’s also a surprisingly character-forward ride, pairing Bruce with formidable allies who aren’t sidekicks so much as equals, brought to life by committed voice work (Mark Dacascos and Kelly Hu especially add real texture). Fair warning: it’s notably violent for an animated superhero outing, but if you’re on the fence and want Batman filtered through martial-arts cinema energy and an original, Batman-adjacent tale, this one earns your time.

Batman: Soul of the Dragon is clearly aiming for a slick, old-school martial-arts riff on Batman, mixing monk-training flashbacks with a cult-and-mysticism threat and a “team of deadly classmates” vibe. When it leans into hand-to-hand action and the unique personalities of Richard Dragon, Lady Shiva, and Ben Turner, it’s genuinely fun and more brutal than you might expect from an animated DC outing. The problem is the story often feels like it’s sprinting through cool ideas without letting any of them land, and the animation can look serviceable rather than exciting, which makes the whole thing a bit forgettable once the novelty wears off. If you’re not already a DC animation regular or you’re hoping for a top-tier Batman narrative, this may feel like a decent genre experiment that never quite becomes a must-watch.
