What people think about Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood's End
Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End is pure, combustible anime joy: a rocket-fueled coming-of-age tale that turns grit, friendship, and sheer willpower into something operatic and oddly moving. Director Hiroyuki Imaishi stages action like a fireworks show—bold colors, elastic animation, and fights that escalate with such gleeful audacity you can practically feel the screen straining to keep up—while still making room for big laughs and bigger emotion. Even as a compilation of the series’ first arc, the film has a propulsive momentum and a satisfying punch, helped by new animation that makes key moments feel freshly supercharged rather than merely recapped. If you prefer grounded sci-fi or subtle character drama, this may be too loud and larger-than-life, but if you’re on the fence and crave a high-octane shot of inspiration, it’s hard to imagine a better two-hour adrenaline rush.
Childhood’s End is clearly trying to bottle the TV series’ early adrenaline rush into a big-screen, crowd-pleasing highlight reel, with Imaishi’s trademark swagger and some genuinely cool new animation at the end. The problem is it’s a compilation first and a movie second: the pacing is on fast-forward, character beats get trimmed down, and emotional moments can feel more like checkpoints than earned turns if you’re not already invested. If you haven’t seen the show, it can come off loud, chaotic, and oddly rushed; if you have, you may find yourself wishing it either committed to being a true remake or just let the original episodes do the heavy lifting. Still, the energy is infectious, the action is stylish, and Kamina’s larger-than-life presence remains the main reason it works at all.
