Freaks – You’re One of Us takes the superhero idea off the skyline and drops it into the fluorescent, exhausted reality of a working-class mom’s life, where power doesn’t feel like a gift so much as a dangerous awakening. Felix Binder keeps the vibe tense and grounded, letting the story play like a paranoid thriller with a streak of bruised, human drama rather than a glossy comic-book romp. Cornelia Gröschel is the film’s beating heart, selling Wendy’s confusion, anger, and fierce survival instinct so convincingly that even the wilder turns feel emotionally earned. It’s not for viewers craving big spectacle or a clean, crowd-pleasing hero’s journey, but if you like your fantasy with grit, unease, and a protagonist who feels real enough to know, this one is worth the watch.

Freaks – You’re One of Us is clearly aiming for a grounded, working-class spin on the superhero origin story, with a German social-thriller edge and a lead character you’re meant to root for. It starts with a genuinely intriguing setup and a few satisfying “power awakening” moments, but the film struggles to keep its momentum, and the conspiracy elements feel more familiar than inventive once they take over.
