Space Sweepers (2021)

Space Sweepers is the kind of big-hearted space adventure that remembers spectacle means nothing without people you care about, and it delivers both with swagger. Director Jo Sung-hee paints a lived-in future of orbiting slums and corporate gleam, then throws you into it with crackling energy, vivid effects, and a crew whose bickering chemistry slowly reveals real bruises underneath. Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri anchor the film with grit and warmth, while the ship’s banter and bursts of action keep the ride playful even as it brushes against surprisingly tender themes of loss, loyalty, and second chances. It’s not the most radically original sci-fi you’ll ever see, and the tone leans crowd-pleasing over cerebral, but if you want a colorful, emotionally grounded blockbuster with genuine charm, this one earns your time.

Space Sweepers is clearly aiming for a big-hearted, scrappy “found family in space” adventure with blockbuster visuals, social commentary, and a cute-but-dangerous child at the center. The problem is the story often feels like a grab bag of familiar sci-fi beats—loud, busy, and ultimately predictable—so the emotional moments don’t always land with the weight the film wants. There are stretches where it plays like glossy “empty calories,” impressive to look at but a bit thin on depth and momentum. If you’re in it for character chemistry, slick production design, and a crowd-pleasing ride, you’ll probably have fun; if you want tight plotting, real surprise, or genuinely daring sci-fi, this may leave you underwhelmed.
