Encounter is clearly aiming to be a tense, emotional road-thriller that uses a sci-fi hook to explore trauma, fatherhood, and what kids inherit from a parent’s fear. Riz Ahmed commits hard and there are stretches of real suspense, especially early on when the film leans into paranoia and uncertainty. But once the story’s true shape becomes clearer, it can feel like it’s juggling two movies at once, with uneven pacing, some heavy-handed messaging, and a plot that starts to look more muddled than mysterious. If you’re expecting a clean, high-concept alien thriller, you may leave frustrated; if you’re open to a grounded, uncomfortable drama wearing genre clothing, it’s more likely to land.
