War Wolves (2009)
Jack Ford leads a special forces unit back to the United States to hunt down Jake Gabriel, a soldier who has been infected with the werewolf virus that turns man into wolf. Little does Jack know that three of the female soldiers serving in his unit have also been infected and have already transformed into she-wolves. The she-wolves' forces of evil and Ford's special op forces of good, are pitted against each other in the race to save mankind from turning into wolves.
What people think about War Wolves
War Wolves is the kind of scrappy, late-night creature feature that knows exactly what it is: a pulpy collision of military bravado and werewolf mayhem that plays best when you surrender to the ride. The fun comes from its old-school genre confidence and a cast of veterans—Tim Thomerson and John Saxon especially—who bring a steady, seen-it-all gravitas that makes the madness go down easy. It’s got a rough-around-the-edges charm and a streak of unintentional humor that turns the tension into a party, the sort of movie you watch with friends and end up quoting. If you need prestige horror or polished effects, this isn’t your hunt—but if you’re craving a B-movie howl with committed performances and a gleefully absurd vibe, it’s a surprisingly good time.
War Wolves is clearly aiming for a pulpy, military-meets-werewolf showdown with a straightforward “hunt the infected” hook and some B-movie bravado. The problem is the execution: the acting is stiff, the effects don’t sell the transformations, and the plot lurches around in ways that make it hard to take seriously unless you’re watching ironically. A lot of it feels slow and oddly joyless for something that wants to be trashy fun, so if you’re hoping for real horror, tension, or even coherent action, this will test your patience. If you like bargain-bin creature features for the unintentional laughs and don’t mind a cheap, messy ride, you might squeeze some entertainment out of it—otherwise, your time is better spent elsewhere.
