Explained

What people think about Van Wilder: Freshman Year

Van Wilder: Freshman Year knows exactly what it is: a loud, shamelessly raunchy campus comedy that treats rebellion like a party theme and authority like a piñata. Dropping its hero into a joyless, militarized college run by a humorless dean, the movie gets its laughs from watching rules get poked, prodded, and inevitably detonated—often with the kind of gross-out gusto that dares you not to laugh. Jonathan Bennett leans into Van’s cocky charm, Kristin Cavallari brings a surprisingly sturdy straight-faced counterweight, and the whole thing plays like a late-night, beer-soaked throwback to the era of gleefully inappropriate teen comedies. It’s absolutely not for anyone who’s allergic to crude sexual humor or R-rated excess, but if you want a no-apologies, switch-your-brain-off romp, it delivers exactly that kind of rowdy satisfaction.
