Van Wilder: Freshman Year (2009)
It is freshman year at Coolidge College and Van Wilder is ready to party. To his dismay, all the girls have taken a vow of chastity and the dean rules the school. Van embarks on a crusade to land the campus hottie, Kaitlin, and liberate his school from sexual oppression and party dysfunction.
What people think about Van Wilder: Freshman Year
Van Wilder: Freshman Year knows exactly what it is: a loud, shamelessly raunchy campus comedy that treats rebellion like a party theme and authority like a piñata. Dropping its hero into a joyless, militarized college run by a humorless dean, the movie gets its laughs from watching rules get poked, prodded, and inevitably detonated—often with the kind of gross-out gusto that dares you not to laugh. Jonathan Bennett leans into Van’s cocky charm, Kristin Cavallari brings a surprisingly sturdy straight-faced counterweight, and the whole thing plays like a late-night, beer-soaked throwback to the era of gleefully inappropriate teen comedies. It’s absolutely not for anyone who’s allergic to crude sexual humor or R-rated excess, but if you want a no-apologies, switch-your-brain-off romp, it delivers exactly that kind of rowdy satisfaction.
Van Wilder: Freshman Year is trying to deliver a throwback, anything-goes campus comedy about rebelling against a joyless, rule-obsessed dean and restoring the “fun” spirit of college. The problem is it mostly mistakes loud, raunchy shock gags for actual jokes, so if you’re not already amused by relentless sex talk, crude pranks, and R-rated gross-out bits, it can feel dull and weirdly joyless. Jonathan Bennett has a likable enough lead energy and Kurt Fuller commits to the villainy, but the movie is thin, derivative, and rarely earns its big moments. If you want clever writing or a romance with real spark, skip it; if you just want nonstop trashy party humor and don’t mind it being more crass than funny, you’ll know what you’re signing up for.
