Hatchet II (2010)
Picking up right where the original ended, Marybeth escapes the clutches of the swamp-dwelling killer Victor Crowley. After learning the truth about her family’s connection to the hatchet-wielding madman, Marybeth returns to the Louisiana swamps along with an army of hunters to recover the bodies of her family and exact the bloodiest revenge against the bayou butcher.
What people think about Hatchet II
Hatchet II is a love letter to old-school slashers that knows exactly what it is: a rowdy, swamp-soaked splatter party where the gore is so extravagant it circles back around to being funny. Adam Green keeps the pace mean and gleeful, letting the Louisiana bayou vibe drip with campfire dread while the movie winks at you through every outrageous, effects-driven kill. Danielle Harris gives the carnage a sturdy center as Marybeth, and Kane Hodder’s Victor Crowley is a hulking, relentless presence that feels ripped from the era when horror icons were built one brutal set-piece at a time. If you’re squeamish or want subtle, psychological scares, steer clear—but if you’re on the fence and crave a knowingly ridiculous, crowd-pleasing slasher that delivers exactly what it promises, this one’s an easy yes.
Hatchet II is trying to be a love letter to old-school splatter slashers: louder, bloodier, and more knowingly ridiculous, picking up immediately after the first film with a simple revenge-and-body-recovery setup. If you’re hoping for tension, clever plotting, or any real escalation beyond “what body part gets obliterated next,” this can feel repetitive and strangely thin, like the script exists mainly to shuttle people into the kill zone. The gore effects are the main event—often impressively practical, but so constant and nasty that it can become numbing rather than thrilling. Watch it if you want a mean, messy, effects-driven carnival of carnage with familiar genre faces; skip it if graphic violence without much suspense or imagination sounds like a chore.
