Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is the kind of old-fashioned haunted-house movie that understands the power of shadows, creaking corridors, and a home that feels like it’s been holding its breath for a century. Troy Nixey drenches Blackwood Manor in gothic atmosphere, letting dread seep in slowly until it turns gripping and, yes, satisfyingly hair-raising, with creatures that feel like a twisted fairy tale given teeth. The performances—especially Bailee Madison’s—anchor the terror in something human, so the scares land with real emotional weight instead of empty jolts. It is also genuinely gruesome at points, so if you’re squeamish or sensitive to violence involving a child in peril, you may want to steer clear—but if you want a lean, mean, mood-driven chill ride, this one delivers.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark wants to be a classy, old-house fairy-tale nightmare with creepy creature lore and a child-in-peril engine driving the tension, and to its credit the atmosphere is suitably grim and the sound design does a lot of heavy lifting. The problem is it plays things fairly straight and literal, so what could’ve been a richly imagined del Toro-style descent often feels like a standard scare machine with characters making frustrating choices and a story that doesn’t deepen much beyond “small things in the dark are after you.” It’s also nastier than it is fun, with some genuinely disturbing violence and tooth-focused imagery that can feel mean-spirited if you’re sensitive to that. If you want moody, contained haunted-house thrills and can live with modest ambitions, it’ll do the job; if you’re hoping for originality, emotional depth, or a standout monster movie, you’ll likely leave underwhelmed.
