It’s at its best when it lets Harold and Kumar’s friendship peek through the smoke—there’s a surprisingly sweet heartbeat under all the raunch, and the New York City misadventures keep the energy sprinting. The jokes are outrageous, the set pieces are big and silly, and Neil Patrick Harris shows up like a festive agent of mayhem, stealing scenes with effortless swagger. It won’t be for anyone allergic to crude humor, but if you want a funny, shameless, oddly feel-good Christmas ride, this one delivers.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas is clearly aiming to bottle the old stoner-buddy chaos and slap a holiday bow on it, with a simple “save Christmas” quest through New York. The problem is it often feels like it’s working overtime to be outrageous, so the laughs can be blunt, hit-and-miss, and occasionally more offensive than clever. If you loved the earlier films for their surprise and freshness, this one may come off tired and a bit like a cash-in, even when it’s trying hard to top itself. Still, if you’re in the mood for dumb, R-rated holiday nonsense and don’t mind uneven comedy, there are enough wild moments and familiar chemistry to make it a passable seasonal watch.
