Kim Ji-hoon keeps the tone buoyant even as the stakes tighten, blending laugh-out-loud social awkwardness with a steadily ratcheting sense of urgency, and the cast—especially Cha Seung-won’s scene-stealing neighbor energy and Lee Kwang-soo’s perfectly frazzled comic timing—makes the camaraderie feel earned rather than corny. It’s the kind of crowd-pleaser that delivers a satisfying, big set-piece ride while still finding warmth in how strangers become a team when everything collapses. If you want grim realism, this isn’t that, but if you’re in the mood for an upbeat, cleverly staged survival comedy with genuine heart, it’s a phenomenal good time.

Sinkhole wants to be a crowd-pleasing Korean disaster movie with a relatable working-class setup, a ticking-clock survival scenario, and a steady stream of jokes to keep things light. It mostly delivers competent tension and likable performances (Cha Seung-won and Lee Kwang-soo in particular bring energy), but don’t expect the kind of bold, stylish filmmaking or wild genre swings that make Korea’s best exports feel electric.
