A Distant Neighborhood takes the familiar “second chance” fantasy and turns it into something quietly profound: not a gimmick, but a tender, funny, aching meditation on family, memory, and the stories we tell ourselves about the people who raised us. Sam Garbarski captures the hazy glow of adolescence without romanticizing it, letting moments of gentle comedy sit naturally beside the film’s deeper emotional currents. Léo Legrand is terrific as a man trapped in his teenage body—old enough to recognize regret, young enough to feel it sting—while the supporting cast gives the past the lived-in texture of a place you swear you’ve been before. If you want a plot-driven time-travel puzzle, this may feel too reflective, but if you’re open to a warm, humane drama with a touch of magic, it lingers like a half-remembered dream you don’t want to shake off.

A Distant Neighborhood is clearly aiming for a tender, wistful “what if I could redo my youth?” story, using time travel as a gentle way to unpack family regret and a father’s disappearance. The problem is it moves at a very unhurried pace and often feels more like drifting through memories than building momentum, so if you’re expecting big twists or sharp comedy, you’ll likely get restless. Some performances can come off a bit muted, which doesn’t help when the script keeps things understated and occasionally underdeveloped. Still, the film has a soft visual charm and a sincere, melancholy warmth that will work best for viewers who enjoy quiet, reflective dramas and don’t need the fantasy premise to deliver fireworks.
