The Roommate (2011)
When Sara, a young design student from Iowa, arrives for college in Los Angeles, she is eager to fit in and get to know the big city. Her wealthy roommate, Rebecca, is more than eager to take Sara under her wing and show her the ropes. The two become close, but when Sara begins to branch out and make more friends on campus, Rebecca becomes resentful. Alarmed, Sara moves in with her new boyfriend, causing Rebecca's behavior to take a violent turn.
What people think about The Roommate
The Roommate is a slick, brisk little thriller that turns the everyday anxiety of sharing a dorm into something sharp-edged and compulsively watchable, powered by the eerie push-pull between Minka Kelly’s open-faced warmth and Leighton Meester’s tightly coiled intensity. It has that glossy, early-2010s campus vibe—part drama, part horror-tinged paranoia—where friendly gestures can feel like traps and every social step forward carries a shadow. Director Christian E. Christiansen keeps the pace moving and the tension simmering, making it an easy “one more scene” watch even when you can sense the storm clouds gathering. It’s not the choice for viewers craving originality or subtle psychological shading, but if you want a clean, crowd-pleasing descent into possessive obsession with a marketable cast and a quick runtime, it delivers the goods.
The Roommate is clearly aiming for a slick, campus-set stalker thriller about friendship turning toxic, and it does have a glossy studio look with a committed, icy performance from Leighton Meester. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar “single white female” beats, so you’ll see most turns coming long before they land, which drains the suspense it’s trying to build. If you’re hoping for real horror intensity or clever psychological twists, this will likely feel tame and oddly slow, with more posing and plotting than genuine tension. It’s best suited for viewers who want an easy, PG-13-ish thriller vibe and don’t mind a predictable ride, but it’s not the one to pick if you’re chasing something sharp, scary, or original.
