The Ties (2020)
Naples, early 1980s. The strained marriage between Aldo and Vanda is fractured one evening when Aldo admits, unprompted, his infidelity. Equally hurt and bewildered, Vanda attempts to hide her pain from the couple's two school-age kids, lest they discover that their cramped apartment is not a home of trust and love. 30 years later, Aldo and Vanda are still tied together, but their relationship with each other and their children continues to be defined by what happened all those years ago.
What people think about The Ties
The Ties is the kind of intimate drama that sneaks up on you: not with big twists, but with the quiet, devastating accuracy of how a single confession can echo through a family for decades. Set against the lived-in texture of Naples, it’s stylish without showing off, letting natural moments and razor-sharp performances—especially from Alba Rohrwacher—do the heavy lifting as love, resentment, and duty knot themselves together. The film’s real power is in its delicate attention to the small gestures and unspoken compromises that define a household, making the emotional fallout feel painfully real rather than melodramatic. If you’re looking for a warm, escapist watch, this isn’t it—but if you want a compelling, beautifully acted portrait of marriage and memory, it’s hard to shake.
The Ties wants to be a bruising, intimate autopsy of a marriage—how one confession can poison a household for decades—and it absolutely leans into that claustrophobic Naples apartment tension. The problem is it can feel overworked and cramped, jumping in ways that look stylish but leave key emotions and motivations oddly vague, so you may end up watching people suffer without fully understanding why they’re making certain choices. Some of its ideas will also feel familiar if you’ve seen other European marital dramas, and the film can come off more like an exercise in tone than a story that lands. Watch it if you’re drawn to icy, controlled domestic misery and strong atmosphere; skip it if you need clear character insight, catharsis, or a narrative that breathes.
