Out of Death (2021)

Out of Death is the kind of lean, back-to-basics thriller that understands the primal power of a chase: one wounded woman, one damning piece of evidence, and a vast stretch of forest that turns every rustle into a warning. Director Mike Burns keeps the tension tight and tactile, letting the wilderness do as much work as the gunfire, while Jaime King sells Shannon’s grit in a performance that’s more survival instinct than action-hero swagger. Bruce Willis brings a weathered calm as the reluctant ally, giving the movie a steady center amid the paranoia and corruption closing in from all sides. It’s not a subtle, character-deep crime saga—and the violence and bleakness may be a dealbreaker for some—but if you want a brisk cat-and-mouse ride with a satisfyingly righteous pulse, this one delivers.

Out of Death is clearly aiming for a lean, backwoods cat-and-mouse thriller about a lone witness taking on corrupt cops, with the forest setting and survival angle doing most of the heavy lifting. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar beats—chases, standoffs, convenient turns—without enough character depth or believable tension to make it land, and the pacing can feel oddly flat for something that’s supposed to be urgent. Performances are uneven, and Bruce Willis’ presence feels more like a name on the poster than a driving force in the story. If you’re happy with a basic “wrong place, wrong time” thriller to kill 90 minutes, you might get by, but if you need sharp writing, strong acting, or fresh twists, this one will likely test your patience.
