Hatching (2022)

Hatching is the kind of horror-fantasy that feels freshly dreamed up: a coming-of-age story filtered through a fairy-tale nightmare, where the pressure to be “perfect” takes on a literal, unsettling life of its own. Hanna Bergholm builds a pristine, pastel world that’s almost too clean, then lets dread seep in through the cracks until the atmosphere becomes hypnotic and quietly suffocating. Siiri Solalinna is remarkable as Tinja, grounding the film’s stranger turns in raw, believable emotion, while the creature work and body-horror imagery land with a tactile, wince-inducing punch that’s hard to shake. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone who wants their scares light and breezy, but if you’re on the fence and crave horror with real bite and meaning, this one rewards your nerves with something genuinely original.

Hatching is clearly aiming for a dark fairy-tale about perfection, parenting, and what happens when a child’s emotions get “externalized” into something monstrous, and that concept is genuinely strong. The problem is the film can feel uneven: it builds a great creepy mood, then drifts in the middle, and some turns are easier to predict than the premise deserves. The body-horror and disturbing imagery are effective but not exactly fun, and if you’re looking for fast scares or a clean, logical creature feature, this will likely test your patience. Still, Siiri Solalinna is excellent, the Finnish suburban “perfect family” satire lands, and when the creature work kicks in, it’s memorably unsettling.
