High School (2010)

High School takes a familiar stoner-comedy setup and jolts it with a surprisingly clever engine: academic pressure colliding with one spectacularly ill-advised attempt to “level the playing field.” The movie’s real pleasure is its breathless momentum—jokes coming fast, stakes escalating faster—and the easy chemistry between Matt Bush’s tightly wound overachiever and Sean Marquette’s mischievous instigator, with Adrien Brody dropping in like a live wire whenever the chaos needs a jolt. It has a bright, genre-savvy vibe that knows exactly how ridiculous it is, then commits to the bit with enough ambition to keep the mayhem inventive instead of repetitive. If you’re not into broad, baked-out escalation or teen-comedy antics, it may be too rowdy, but if you want a high-energy, good-time comedy with a playful twist on the formula, this one earns its laughs.

High School is clearly aiming for a rowdy, anti-authority stoner caper where one bad decision snowballs into a schoolwide scheme, and on paper that’s a solid setup. The problem is the execution feels oddly flat for something this chaotic, with a tone that swings between goofy and grim without ever locking into a rhythm that reliably delivers laughs. Adrien Brody brings some committed, off-kilter energy as Psycho Ed, and there are a few scattered moments of absurdity, but the premise doesn’t build to the big comedic payoff it promises. If you want a consistently funny, warm, or cleverly escalating stoner comedy, this may feel like a buzzkill; if you’re okay with messy, uneven antics and a meaner edge, you might still get a mild kick out of it.
