When Betty Anne Waters' older brother Kenny is arrested for murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction. Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and, finally, law school in an 18 year quest to free Kenny. With the help of best friend Abra Rice, Betty Anne pores through suspicious evidence mounted by small town cop Nancy Taylor, meticulously retracing the steps that led to Kenny's arrest. Belief in her brother - and her quest for the truth - pushes Betty Anne and her team to uncover the facts and utilize DNA evidence with the hope of exonerating Kenny.

Explained

What people think about Conviction

Conviction is special because it turns a familiar courtroom premise into something rarer and more affecting: a portrait of stubborn love measured in years, not speeches. Hilary Swank gives Betty Anne a lived-in grit and decency, and Sam Rockwell matches her with a performance that makes the cost of waiting for justice feel personal, while Minnie Driver brings warmth and steel to the friendship that keeps the fight from collapsing under its own weight. Tony Goldwyn directs with restraint, letting the case details and small-town pressures simmer rather than explode, so the movie plays less like a twisty thriller and more like an honest, hard-earned surge of hope. It’s not for viewers craving a fast, flashy legal ride, but if you want an inspirational true story grounded in real emotion and the slow machinery of perseverance, this one stays with you.
