Rang Rasiya feels special because it treats art as a living, dangerous force—something that can intoxicate, scandalize, and change the way a society sees itself. Ketan Mehta paints British-era India with lush period detail and a simmering, intimate energy, anchored by Randeep Hooda’s passionate, restless take on Raja Ravi Varma and Nandana Sen’s poised, quietly defiant presence as his muse. The film’s vibe is romantic and provocative rather than genteel, leaning into the sensuality and controversy that made Varma’s work a lightning rod, while Paresh Rawal adds grit to the world of patrons, power, and public outrage. It’s not for everyone—there’s explicit nudity and sexual content, plus a few sharp bursts of violence—but if you’re open to a bold historical drama about the price of creative freedom, it’s engrossing and unapologetically alive.

Rang Rasiya is clearly aiming to be a passionate, adult biopic about Raja Ravi Varma—using his art and scandal to argue for creative freedom in a prudish, censor-happy society. The problem is it often leans so hard on erotic provocation that the historical and emotional depth can feel secondary, making the drama come off more like a series of controversies than a fully lived-in portrait of the man. If you’re expecting a richly detailed, classroom-friendly period film, or you’re uncomfortable with explicit nudity and sex (it’s not coy about it), this will likely be a hard pass. That said, Randeep Hooda brings intensity, the period mood is attractive, and if you’re open to a sensual, debate-driven take on art versus morality, you may find it worthwhile despite its uneven focus.
