The film’s romance isn’t a glossy escape so much as a fragile, tense spark in a world built to extinguish it, with George MacKay bringing a troubled sincerity that keeps the connection complicated and believable. It’s an emotionally heavy watch with some disturbing imagery, and if you prefer your wartime dramas strictly procedural or your love stories neatly comforting, it may not be your fit—but if you want a moving, well-acted film that expands what we think we know about that era, it’s worth your time.
