Last Man Down (2021)

Last Man Down is the kind of lean, hard-hitting throwback action thriller that remembers why we fell in love with bigger-than-life heroes and unapologetically nasty villains in the first place. Set against a stark Nordic wilderness after a pandemic has broken the world, it pairs icy atmosphere with muscular, well-staged action sequences that keep the momentum up even when the story keeps things simple. Daniel Stisen brings a bruised, physical presence to a soldier who’d rather disappear than play savior, and the film wisely lets its guns-and-grit vibe do the talking. If you need intricate mystery plotting, it may feel thin, but if you’re craving a brisk, satisfying blast of old-school action energy, it delivers.

Last Man Down is clearly aiming for a lean, post-apocalyptic revenge thriller with a “lone wolf dragged back into the fight” hook, and the Nordic wilderness setting gives it a bit of grit and atmosphere. The problem is it often feels like it’s running on fumes: the pacing is sluggish, the script leans on familiar beats without adding much tension, and the performances can come off stiff when the story needs urgency. There are a few moments of straightforward action and a simple, easy-to-follow premise, but they’re not enough to consistently lift the film out of its mid-budget, been-there-done-that rut. If you’re expecting a propulsive thriller or sharp mystery elements, you may get bored; if you’re okay with a basic revenge setup and can tolerate slower stretches, it might pass as background viewing.
