Pariah (2011)

Dee Rees directs with a quiet confidence that makes Brooklyn feel lived-in rather than “set,” and Adepero Oduye’s performance as Alike is so grounded you can practically hear her thoughts in the silences. The film’s vibe is tender but unsentimental—full of music, late-night energy, and the ache of first desire—while never dodging the real costs of honesty at home. It isn’t an easy watch in places, especially around family conflict and homophobia, but it’s ultimately invigorating: a story about claiming your own life with clear eyes and a steady heartbeat.
