My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done is the kind of crime thriller that feels less like a puzzle to be solved and more like a fever dream you can’t quite shake, unfolding with an eerie calm that makes everything feel dangerously off-kilter. Werner Herzog and David Lynch (as producer) give it a stylized, brooding atmosphere where ordinary streets and friendly faces take on a quietly menacing weight, and the tension comes from psychology as much as circumstance. Michael Shannon is riveting at the center, turning Brad into someone you can’t excuse but can’t stop watching, a portrait of unraveling that’s both unsettling and strangely hypnotic. It won’t satisfy viewers craving a conventional whodunit or clean explanations, but if you’re drawn to unconventional, enthralling mood pieces that linger in the mind, this one is absolutely worth the trip.

The problem is it often feels more enigmatic than insightful, drifting into digressions and oddball scenes that can come off like “weird for weird’s sake” rather than building real tension or meaning. If you want a tight crime thriller with clear motivations and momentum, this may be exasperating and even a bit embarrassing in how self-serious it can feel.
