Billu (2009)
When a famous Bollywood actor visits a small village for a film's shoot, a poor hairdresser's claim that they were once childhood friends soon makes him the centre of attention.
What people think about Billu
Billu is special because it takes the shiny mythology of Bollywood stardom and gently flips it into a heartfelt story about dignity, gratitude, and the quiet heroism of ordinary people. Priyadarshan keeps the vibe warm and village-breezy, letting the comedy bubble up from small-town frenzy while the drama sneaks in through Irrfan Khan’s beautifully restrained performance as a man who refuses to trade his self-respect for attention. Shah Rukh Khan brings the movie-star sparkle, but the film’s real charm is how it watches a community’s adoration turn fickle, and then asks what friendship is worth when the spotlight moves on. It’s wholesome and family-friendly with a few sensuous song moments, and if you’re allergic to Bollywood’s musical flourishes it may not be your tempo—but if you want something entertaining that leaves you a little softer than it found you, Billu delivers.
Billu is clearly aiming for a warm, small-town fable about dignity, friendship, and how fame turns people into opportunists, and Irrfan Khan gives it a grounded sincerity that deserves better than the noise around it. The problem is Priyadarshan can’t resist padding that simple emotional story with glossy Bollywood “event” moments—celebrity worship, broad comedy beats, and glamorous song sequences that interrupt rather than deepen the core relationship. If you’re coming for a tight, intimate drama, you may find the commercial flourishes and hokey detours dilute the impact and make the pacing feel uneven. But if you’re fine with a sentimental message delivered in a very mainstream package (and you’re mostly here for Irrfan’s warmth plus a heavy dose of Shah Rukh Khan’s star presence), it can still land.
