Big Fan (2009)

Big Fan is special because it takes a premise that could’ve been a broad joke—an obsessive sports diehard—and turns it into a surprisingly tender, bruising character study that lingers like a hard truth you didn’t know you needed. Patton Oswalt gives a subtle, quietly brilliant performance, finding the humanity inside Paul’s rituals and rants so you’re not laughing at him as much as recognizing something uncomfortably familiar. The vibe is darkly funny and steadily tightening, with an uncompromising willingness to follow its emotions to places most comedies would dodge, making it both effective and genuinely thought-provoking about identity, loyalty, and the stories we tell ourselves. It’s not for everyone if you want a crowd-pleasing sports movie or easy catharsis, but if you like smart, sympathetic dramas with sharp edges, this one is absolutely worth your time.

Big Fan is trying to be a darkly funny, painfully human look at sports obsession and what happens when a fan’s fantasy collides with real life, and it mostly commits to that uncomfortable tone. Patton Oswalt gives an earnest, vulnerable performance, but if you don’t buy him as this specific kind of Staten Island superfan, the whole movie can feel slightly “off” and harder to invest in.
