Beautiful Boy (2018)

Beautiful Boy is special because it refuses easy answers, turning the familiar “addiction drama” into something intimate and fiercely human—a portrait of love that keeps showing up even when hope feels exhausted. Felix van Groeningen directs with a quiet, compassionate steadiness, letting the story move through memory and present pain in a way that feels like real life: messy, repetitive, and achingly tender. Steve Carell brings a raw, searching vulnerability to a father who can’t stop trying, while Timothée Chalamet is astonishingly alive on screen, capturing both the magnetism and the devastation of a young man slipping away. It’s a heavy watch with upsetting drug-use imagery and emotional distress, but if you can handle that, the film’s honesty and empathy linger long after the credits.

Beautiful Boy is clearly trying to be an unvarnished, compassionate look at addiction as a family illness, and it largely succeeds on the strength of Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet’s raw, committed performances. The problem is the film’s back-and-forth structure and relapse cycle can start to feel repetitive and emotionally draining, like you’re watching the same wound reopened without enough new insight each time. It’s also a fairly narrow experience—more a series of painful moments than a sharply shaped drama—so if you need forward momentum or a sense of catharsis, this may leave you frustrated. If you can handle heavy subject matter and want a realistic, often uncomfortable portrait of love and helplessness, it’s worth your time; if you’re already sensitive to addiction stories or want something uplifting, steer clear.
