Jean-Jacques Annaud stages the night with muscular craftsmanship—clean, readable action amid chaos—so the urgency never becomes noise, and the visuals carry a reverence for what’s at stake without drifting into sentimentality. The film’s thriller pulse comes from process and peril rather than villains, honoring the firefighters and officials whose split-second decisions feel thrilling precisely because they’re real. If you want character backstories and melodrama, this may feel more procedural than personal, but if you’re on the fence, it’s hard to resist a movie that makes you feel the weight of history and the breathless fight to save it.

Notre-Dame on Fire is clearly trying to be an inside-the-blaze tribute to the real people who fought to save a cultural landmark, and on a technical level it often delivers tense, immersive fire-and-rescue spectacle. The problem is that the human side feels thin and overly scripted, with clunky dialogue and broad, generic character beats that can make the emotion land as forced rather than earned. It also can’t quite decide whether it wants to be a sober docudrama or a conventional disaster thriller, so the tone sometimes wobbles into mawkish, sermon-y sentiment.
