Demoted (2011)

Demoted is the kind of scrappy workplace comedy that knows exactly what it is: a rowdy, R-rated comeuppance tale where the punchlines land because the humiliation feels oddly deserved. J.B. Rogers keeps the vibe brisk and bawdy—think office politics, petty revenge, and locker-room swagger colliding with the soul-crushing reality of entry-level drudgery—while Sean Astin and Michael Vartan sell the slow pivot from smug jerks to guys who might actually grow a conscience. The real secret weapon is David Cross, who turns managerial pettiness into an art form and gives the movie a deliciously hateable engine. It’s not subtle and it’s not groundbreaking, and if crude sexual humor isn’t your lane you’ll want to steer clear, but if you’re in the mood for an easy, funny watch with a surprisingly warm streak under the raunch, this one goes down smooth.

Demoted is aiming for a broad, old-school workplace comeuppance comedy where two smug sales hotshots get humbled and learn to respect the people they’ve been trampling on. The problem is the execution: the jokes lean heavily on crude, strip-club-and-office-prank humor, and the pacing can feel like it’s dragging from one thin bit to the next rather than building real momentum. Even with a capable cast (David Cross in particular), the script doesn’t give them much to elevate, so a lot of scenes play flatter and longer than they should. If you like raunchy R-rated office comedies and don’t mind a predictable “jerks become decent” arc, you might get a few easy laughs; if you’re hoping for sharper writing or consistent comedy, this will likely feel like a time-waster.
