Heartless (2010)

Heartless is the kind of modern urban fairy tale that feels bruised, lyrical, and strangely beautiful—part horror film, part coming-of-age nightmare, all soaked in the neon-and-soot atmosphere of London’s East End. Philip Ridley directs with a painter’s eye and a poet’s cruelty, turning demon-masked street violence into something mythic, while Jim Sturgess anchors the film with a raw, sympathetic performance that makes the fear and longing feel uncomfortably real. The suspense doesn’t come from cheap jolts so much as a creeping sense that every “escape” has a price, and the movie’s visuals stay with you like a bad dream you can’t quite shake. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s some genuinely brutal imagery—but if you like horror that bites into insecurity, desire, and the temptation to reinvent yourself, this one is absolutely worth the plunge.

Heartless is aiming for a grimy East End fairy tale: part demonic gang horror, part Faustian morality play, with a sincere interest in how shame and isolation can warp a person. When it works, it’s got striking imagery, a nasty little atmosphere, and Jim Sturgess sells the vulnerability well enough to keep you leaning in. The problem is the storytelling: it drifts into portentous, muddled plotting with thin character work and dialogue that can feel more like declarations than human conversation, so the tension keeps stopping to announce its themes. If you like surreal, message-heavy horror and can forgive coherence for mood, you may be into it; if you need tight pacing, clear rules, and emotionally grounded characters, this will likely test your patience.
