Womb (2010)

Benedek Fliegauf wraps its provocative premise in a hushed, hypnotic atmosphere: bleak coastal landscapes, Peter Szatmári’s coolly precise photography, and Max Richter’s aching score all conspire to put you in a dream you can’t quite wake from. Eva Green gives a fearless, deeply felt performance that keeps the film grounded even as the story drifts into morally thorny territory, inviting you to wrestle with love, grief, and identity rather than offering easy answers. It’s not for viewers who want comfort or clean catharsis, but if you’re drawn to daring, artful films that linger in the mind, this one is worth the plunge.

Womb is clearly aiming for a chilly, arthouse meditation on grief, identity, and the ethics of cloning, using a deliberately restrained style to make the idea feel unsettling rather than sensational. The problem is that the film often confuses “quiet” with “empty,” moving at a glacial pace and keeping the characters at such an emotional distance that the central relationship can feel more like a concept being demonstrated than a drama you can actually feel. It also leans into taboo territory in a way that’s meant to be thought-provoking, but if you need warmth, catharsis, or even basic narrative momentum, this will likely leave you cold and frustrated. That said, Eva Green and Matt Smith commit fully, and the moody atmosphere is strong—just don’t come expecting a conventional romance or satisfying sci-fi payoff.
